Reviving a 12-Year-Old Laptop: A Perfect First Computer for My Child

In an effort to breathe new life into an old computer, I recently refurbished a 12-year-old laptop and installed Ubuntu on it. This will be the first laptop for my four-year-old, providing her with a wonderful opportunity to learn how to type and express her creativity through writing.

One of my primary considerations is how to simplify the user experience for her. Ideally, I’d like the laptop to boot directly into a text editor, enabling her to start writing without having to navigate with a mouse, which she’s not familiar with just yet. Making the interface straightforward will help her focus on developing her typing skills without unnecessary distractions.

Another technical query I have is regarding the Caps Lock functionality. Is it possible to configure the device to start up with Caps Lock enabled? This feature would help her as she learns to familiarize herself with uppercase letters and their use in writing.
