Restored my 12-year-old laptop and set up Ubuntu—now it’s my 4-year-old’s first computer to help her learn typing and writing skills.

Reviving an Old Laptop: Introducing My Child to Ubuntu

In an exciting turn of events, I recently revived my 12-year-old laptop and decided to install Ubuntu on it. This will serve as the perfect introductory laptop for my four-year-old daughter, providing her with a platform to learn typing and writing.

As I set up this machine, I’m focused on making it as user-friendly as possible for her. My main objective is to configure the laptop to launch directly into a text editor upon startup. This way, she won’t need to navigate with a mouse just yet, allowing her to focus solely on developing her typing and writing skills.

Additionally, I have a curiosity about whether it’s possible to have the laptop start with the Caps Lock key activated. This feature could provide her with a unique typing experience, especially as she begins to familiarize herself with the keyboard.

Stay tuned as I explore these configurations and share tips for parents looking to introduce technology to their little ones in a practical and accessible way!
