Restored my 12-year-old laptop and set up Ubuntu—now it’s my 4-year-old’s first device to help her learn typing and writing.

Reviving an Old Laptop: Creating the Perfect Learning Environment for My Child

In an exciting project, I recently revived my 12-year-old laptop and decided to install Ubuntu on it. The idea behind this rejuvenation? To gift it to my four-year-old daughter as her very first laptop. It will serve as a great tool for her to learn the basics of typing and writing.

One of my goals is to make her experience as seamless as possible, so I’m on a mission to set up the laptop to launch directly into a text editor. This way, she won’t have to navigate using a mouse just yet, allowing her to focus on developing her writing skills without the distraction of complicated features.

Additionally, I’m curious about whether it’s feasible to have the device start with the Caps Lock key activated. This could be particularly useful if I want her to practice capitalizing the first letter of each sentence right from her first typing session.

Stay tuned for updates on our journey as we navigate this exciting transition and explore the world of computing together!
