Reviving a Trusty Old Laptop: A First Device for My Child

In today’s tech-driven world, introducing our children to digital skills at an early age can be incredibly beneficial. Recently, I resurrected a 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu, and it will serve as my 4-year-old’s very first computer. My goal is to create a learning environment where she can develop her typing and writing skills in a user-friendly setting.

One challenge I’m facing is how to configure the laptop to launch directly into a text editor upon startup. This adjustment would allow her to dive right into her writing adventures without the need for mouse navigation, making the experience more accessible for her at this young age.

Additionally, I’m exploring whether it’s possible to set the device to start with the Caps Lock enabled. This feature could simplify typing for her as she begins to familiarize herself with letters and punctuation.

As I embark on this journey of tech exploration with my daughter, I’m excited to see how she will engage with this old yet reliable technology. By fostering her curiosity and creativity, I hope to lay the foundation for her future learning endeavors.
