In a recent endeavor, I decided to breathe new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu. This rejuvenated machine is set to become the first laptop for my four-year-old daughter, providing her with an opportunity to explore the world of typing and writing in a fun and engaging way.

One of my goals is to create a seamless experience for her as she gets accustomed to using a computer. To simplify the learning process, I am exploring ways to configure the laptop so that it automatically opens a text editor upon startup. This would mean she wouldn’t need to navigate the complexities of a mouse just yet, allowing her to focus solely on developing her typing skills.

Additionally, I have a technical query: is it possible to set up the laptop so that it boots with the Caps Lock key activated? This would facilitate her initial interactions with the keyboard, ensuring that she can easily capitalize letters without needing to master the Shift key right away.
