Reviving an Old Laptop: Setting Up a First Computer for My Child

It’s incredible what a little time and effort can do for an old device! Recently, I brought my trusty 12-year-old laptop back to life and decided to install Ubuntu on it. I’m thrilled to turn this laptop into the first computer for my 4-year-old daughter, where she can start learning how to type and express her creativity in writing.

One of the challenges I’m currently facing is making the user experience as straightforward as possible for her. Ideally, I want the laptop to boot directly into a text editor, allowing her to focus on writing without needing to navigate with a mouse just yet. Simplifying the interface could significantly help her become familiar with typing without the added complexity of point-and-click.

Additionally, I’ve got a couple of questions regarding the system settings. Is there a way to configure the laptop so that it starts with the Caps Lock function enabled? This could make it easier for her to write in uppercase letters when she wants to, especially as she acquires the skill of typing.
