Reviving an Old Laptop: A Perfect Learning Tool for My Child

In today’s world, introducing technology to children early can foster valuable skills. Recently, I took the plunge to rejuvenate an older laptop—one that has served its purpose for over a decade—by installing Ubuntu. This laptop is now about to embark on a new journey as the first computer for my four-year-old daughter. My hope is that she will learn the basics of typing and writing in a fun and engaging way.

One of the primary goals is to simplify her experience with the laptop. I’m currently exploring the best way to configure it so that it opens directly into a text editor upon startup. This adjustment would allow her to start typing immediately without the need to maneuver with a mouse, which can be a bit of a challenge at her age.

Additionally, I have a couple of other practical considerations. One question on my mind is whether it’s possible to set the laptop to always start with the Caps Lock activated. This could be beneficial for her, as it would make all types of writing easier, especially for someone just getting accustomed to the keyboard.
