Revitalized my 12-year-old laptop, installed Ubuntu, and now it’s my 4-year-old’s first device to learn typing and writing. (Variation 42)

Reviving an Old Laptop: A Perfect First Device for My Child

I recently undertook a rewarding project: I successfully revived my old laptop, which had been gathering dust for the past 12 years. After installing Ubuntu, I am excited to announce that this laptop will soon become my 4-year-old daughter’s very first computer. My aim is to create an enriching environment where she can learn how to type and express her thoughts in writing.

One of my main objectives for this laptop setup is to simplify the user experience as much as possible. I want her to dive straight into typing without getting overwhelmed by navigating with a mouse at this stage. Thus, I am exploring the most effective way to configure the laptop to open directly into a text editor upon startup. This would allow her to immediately begin writing and creating, making the learning process both enjoyable and intuitive.

Additionally, I’m curious about modifying settings to have the Caps Lock function activated upon startup. This feature could provide her with an easier time transitioning into written expression without needing to grasp multiple keyboard functions initially.

I look forward to sharing updates on how this journey unfolds and hope to inspire other parents to repurpose their old tech into tools for learning and creativity. Stay tuned for more insights on the best ways to prepare a child-friendly computing experience!
