Reviving an Old Laptop: Setting Up Ubuntu for My Child’s First Computer Experience
It’s not every day you come across a 12-year-old laptop that still has some life left in it, but that’s exactly what I encountered recently. After some much-needed repairs and an installation of Ubuntu, I’m excited to announce this trusty old machine is getting a new lease on life as a learning tool for my four-year-old daughter.
My goal is to create an environment where she can comfortably learn to type and express her creativity through writing. With this in mind, I’m on the hunt for the simplest way to configure the laptop so that it boots directly into a text editor. This would eliminate the need for her to navigate the mouse just yet, allowing her to focus entirely on her writing skills.
Another question I have is whether it’s possible to set the laptop to start with Caps Lock enabled. It would be great for her to explore the keyboard without needing to worry about lowercase letters while she’s just starting to get the hang of typing.
I’m looking forward to sharing this journey of technology and learning with my daughter, and I can’t wait to see how she grows into this new adventure! If you have any tips or suggestions for optimizing this setup, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
