Reviving my 12-year-old laptop with Ubuntu: now it’s my 4-year-old’s first tool for learning typing and writing

Reviving an Old Laptop: A Perfect First Computer for My Child

Recently, I embarked on a project to breathe new life into my 12-year-old laptop by installing Ubuntu on it. I’ve decided to turn it into a learning tool for my four-year-old daughter, providing her with her very first computer. This will not only introduce her to technology but also offer a platform for her to practice typing and writing.

As I set up this laptop, I’m contemplating the most user-friendly way to ensure it opens directly into a text editor upon startup. The goal is for her to navigate the device without needing to learn how to use a mouse quite yet, simplifying her initial experience.

Additionally, I have a question regarding the keyboard settings: is there a way to configure the laptop so that it automatically starts with the Caps Lock enabled? This could be beneficial for her early writing endeavors, making it easier for her to see her letters in uppercase.

I look forward to sharing more about this journey and gathering tips on creating a child-friendly computing experience!
