Seagate Hard Drive Failing?

Is Your Seagate Hard Drive Showing Signs of Trouble? Here’s What to Do

If you’ve recently purchased a Seagate Ironwolf 16TB drive and installed it into your Network-Attached Storage (NAS) unit, you might find yourself facing unexpected issues, just like I did.

Let me share my experience to help anyone else who may be encountering similar problems with their Seagate hard drives.

A Troubling Encounter

At the end of March, I eagerly set up my new Seagate Ironwolf drive, integrating it seamlessly into my NAS system. Initially, everything functioned flawlessly; the drive was recognized, and my data was secure. However, things took a turn recently when I needed to turn off the NAS for a guest’s overnight stay, as its operational noise was disruptive.

When I powered the NAS back on the following morning, I was alarmed to find that the new drive wasn’t recognized. After reseating the drive, it appeared again—but only as a new, uninitialized drive. This was concerning to say the least. Opting to recover the volume using the newly recognized drive seemed to work, but I remained uneasy about what this meant for its reliability.

The Persistent Whirring Noise

To add to my frustration, I noticed a constant whirring sound whenever the drive was idle. I performed both quick and extended S.M.A.R.T. diagnostic tests, which the drive passed without any issues, and during those tests, there were no unusual sounds.

Curious about this persistent whirring, I sought out similar experiences online but didn’t find anything that truly matched. The noise isn’t the clicking or chirping usually associated with head parking issues, nor does it resemble typical read or write sounds. It’s a steady hum that quiets down when the drive is accessed, which leaves me uncertain about its health.

Seeking Guidance

The pressing question now is whether this behavior indicates a failing hard drive. Should I reach out to Seagate’s customer support for assistance, given that the drive is still under warranty?

As someone who is reasonably tech-savvy, I’m keen to troubleshoot further or adjust my NAS settings to rectify this issue. If you’ve experienced anything similar or have insights on how to address this problem effectively, please share your thoughts. Your guidance could be invaluable to not only me but to many in the same boat.

Let’s start a conversation on how to tackle these hard drive issues together!
