Seeking Advice: Over 500 Hard Drives Stacked in My Garage—What Should I Do?

What Should I Do with Over 500 Hard Drives? Seeking Guidance

I find myself in a rather unexpected situation: I’m currently the custodian of more than 500 hard drives, all sitting in my garage, and I could really use some advice on how to proceed.

The backstory is a bit bittersweet. A few years ago, my late father-in-law stumbled upon a large collection of refurbished SCSI hard disk drives. Although I’m not entirely sure how he acquired them, his goal was to resell them. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could make that happen, and now I’m left to figure out what to do with this impressive, yet overwhelming, inventory.

As I assess the situation and research the model numbers, I’ve discovered that their market value varies significantly, typically ranging from $10 to $120 each. However, considering their age, I’m not confident about finding buyers who might be interested. To add to this dilemma, all of the hard drives are factory refurbished, sealed, and neatly packaged, ready for shipment.

Part of me thinks about cutting my losses—essentially taking a financial hit on what was originally my father-in-law’s investment—and scrapping them. On the other hand, I can’t shake the feeling that there might be individuals or businesses out there that could truly benefit from these drives.

I’m reaching out to you, the community, for your insights and advice. What’s the best path forward? Should I attempt to sell them, or is scrapping them the more sensible route?

For reference, here are the specific model numbers in my possession:

  1. Seagate Barracuda ST15150N
  2. Seagate Barracuda ST118273LC
  3. Seagate Cheetah ST118202LC
  4. IBM DRHS IEC-950 ECE32148

Any thoughts or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
