Should I place this cooling strip on my new 2 TB SSD?

Should You Use a Cooling Strip on Your New 2TB SSD?

When upgrading or transferring data between SSDs, considerations for temperature management often come to the forefront. Recently, I found myself in a similar situation while transitioning data to a new 2TB WD_BLACK 770 SSD to be used in an external USB-C enclosure.

Previously, I had a Crucial P5 PLUS M.2 512GB SSD, which included a thermal pad for cooling. This made the installation easy since the SSD was covered with a black sticker that obscured its internal components. However, my new WD_BLACK SSD presents a different scenario. It’s exposed, and the lack of protective covering raises some concerns about applying the cooling strip that came with my previous SSD.

For context, I plan to transfer approximately 300GB of data from my internal 1TB E drive, which will soon become my new C drive after a system wipe. The 2TB SSD will then take the place of that E drive. My intention is not to keep the SSD in the enclosure for an extended period, but the rapid data transfer could generate some heat.

This brings me to my question: Is it advisable to apply the white thermal strip to the exposed WD_BLACK SSD? While I understand the intended purpose of the cooling strip, I’m apprehensive about potentially damaging the components of the new drive.

In conclusion, I’m seeking advice on whether or not installing the cooling strip is beneficial or necessary in this case. If you have experience or knowledge in this area, your insights would be greatly appreciated!
