Spilled around a 500ml drink(non-alcoholic) into my pc

A Cautionary Tale: How I Handled a Mid-Night Drink Disaster with My PC

It’s 2:00 AM, and the last thing you want is to spill a drink into your precious computer. However, life often throws us curveballs! Recently, I faced a situation that I hope others can learn from.

While I was sound asleep, I accidentally knocked over my cup, which toppled onto my keyboard. Most of the liquid splashed onto the floor, but unfortunately, some managed to seep into my PC. Upon waking, my heart sank as I realized the potential damage. Acting quickly, I turned off the power supply and unplugged the system to prevent further issues.

Given the late hour, I decided to remove the components and let them dry outside on my balcony, where the temperature was a warm 30 degrees Celsius. Having invested both time and money into building my computer, the thought of losing everything was incredibly distressing.

With this disaster looming over me, I faced a pressing question: what should I do next? Although I’m no expert, my instinct was to disassemble the entire system piece by piece, including the CPU and motherboard, to ensure each component dried thoroughly before reassembling.

The next morning, with a heavy heart but determined focus, I began the disassembly. The process revealed a few droplets on the backplate of the motherboard and metal covers of my TUF Gaming B650M, but thankfully, the inside was largely clean. I took extra precautions, ordering 400ml of WMD89 for a thorough cleaning and purchased some extra caution to ensure my GPU, which was still under warranty, remained undamaged.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who offered support and advice. Your guidance made a challenging situation feel more manageable. While I did lose the warranty on my power supply, the situation could have been much worse.

In closing, I’ve learned to be more cautious around my beloved devices, especially as I eagerly await the release of GTA 6! If you ever find yourself in a similar predicament, remember that quick action and disassembly might save the day! Stay safe, and may your PC always be spill-free!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your spill incident—it can be quite stressful! Based on your description, here’s some advice to help you safely proceed:

    • Immediately power off and unplug your PC, which you already did—great first step!
    • Disassemble the affected components carefully, ensuring they are completely dry before attempting to power on again. For drying, use a combination of gentle air drying and, if available, desiccants like silica gel packets.
    • Since you mentioned ordering WMD89 cleaner, ensure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and avoid rinsing components with water unless specified safe.
    • Check for corrosion or residue on the motherboard and other sensitive parts. If in doubt, you might consider consulting a professional technician for thorough cleaning.
    • Before reassembling and powering up, verify that all components are fully dry. This might take 24-48 hours depending on the drying conditions.
    • In the future, consider applying a silicone sealant or protective film around critical areas to prevent liquid ingress. Also, using a spill-proof keyboard or cup holder can minimize accidents during late hours.

It’s commendable that you took quick actions and documented your process. Remember, safety first—if you’re unsure about the safety of reassembling your PC, professional servicing is the safest route. Wishing you the best recovery, and I hope your build
