Stumbled upon public webcam stream of kid’s bedroom. Contacted ISP (ROGERS.com) – They couldn’t care less. What to do?

Concerning Encounters with Public Webcam Streams: A Call to Action

Recently, I had a rather unsettling experience while browsing Shodan, a search engine that reveals various Internet of Things (IoT) devices and their vulnerabilities. To my shock, I came across a public webcam stream originating from a child’s bedroom. My initial assumption was that the webcam owner, a customer of Rogers Communications in Canada, was likely unaware of this breach of privacy. As a parent myself, I felt compelled to take action.

Attempting to Reach Out to the ISP

Assuming that the Internet Service Provider (ISP) would take the matter seriously, I promptly contacted Rogers’ customer support. Unfortunately, my inquiries were met with indifference. After a lengthy conversation and a transfer to a supervisor, I was advised that I should reach out to either the authorities in Austria or the Canadian authorities, as I reside in Austria. It seemed absurd that this disturbing situation could be brushed aside so easily.

In my attempt to escalate the issue, I also contacted Rogers through their dedicated abuse email and reached out to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, as well as the Canadian Centre for cyber security. While I attempted to contact the Canadian authorities directly using the number provided by Rogers, I encountered challenges getting through. It seemed my options were limited at that moment.

A Break in the Cloud

As of January 26, I received an update that the owner of the webcam had been contacted, and the video feed has since been secured with a password. This development was a relief, as it indicated that the situation was being taken seriously—at least by one party involved. Additionally, Rogers has informed me that they have escalated the situation and will be reaching out to the webcam owner as well.

I appreciate the overwhelming support and suggestions from the community during this process. It underscores the importance of collective vigilance when it comes to matters of privacy and child safety online.

Moving Forward

This experience has emphasized the critical need for vigilance in our increasingly connected world. As curious individuals, we may inadvertently stumble upon unguarded personal information, and it’s essential to know how to respond appropriately. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, here are a few steps to consider:

  1. Report the Issue: Contact the ISP as well as any relevant authorities.

  2. Document Everything: Keep records of your communications, including timestamps and transcripts, so that you can refer back to them if needed.
