Understanding the potential risks involved, especially for the child’s privacy and safety, I felt compelled to take action. The IP address indicated that the webcam belonged to an account with Rogers, a Canadian internet service provider. I decided to reach out to their customer support in hopes of addressing the issue.
My Experience with Customer Support
I initiated a chat with Rogers, clearly outlining my concerns. After being connected to a first-level support agent, I explained that I was not a customer but had located a disturbing webcam feed on Shodan, a search engine that reveals security vulnerabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Despite my urgency, the representative was unable to provide any solution and merely referred me to a “supervisor.”
After a lengthy discussion, the supervisor suggested that I report the incident to local authorities. As a resident of Austria, I expressed my skepticism regarding whether the Austrian police would effectively communicate with Canadian authorities about such a delicate issue. Frustrated, I felt that there had to be a way for Rogers to intervene more directly.
