Stumbled upon public webcam stream of kid’s bedroom. Contacted ISP (ROGERS.com) – They couldn’t care less. What to do?

Encountering a Public Webcam Stream: A Call for Action

Recently, I came across a troubling situation while browsing Shodan, an IoT search engine. I discovered a public webcam streaming live footage from a child’s bedroom. Realizing the potential dangers and privacy violations associated with such exposure, I attempted to alert the internet service provider (ISP), Rogers, based in Canada, about the issue.

Initial Attempts for Resolution

Upon contacting their customer support, I was met with a rather unsatisfactory response. After a prolonged conversation with a representative and a subsequent transfer to a supervisor, I learned that I could only be referred to local authorities either in Austria (where I reside) or Canada. This left me feeling frustrated and helpless, as I was hoping for more direct assistance in addressing the privacy concern.

In my attempts to seek help, I maintained a detailed transcript of my conversation with Rogers support. This documentation, while it shows the challenges I faced, also reflects my dedication to resolving the issue effectively. Despite my insistence that the webcam owners were likely unaware of their stream being publicly accessible, the support team remained limited in their options, referring me back to law enforcement channels.

Updates and Progress

I’m relieved to report that there have been some positive developments. As of January 26, the webcam owner has been contacted, and the video feed is now password protected. This step significantly mitigates the risk of unwanted exposure.

Furthermore, I received an email from Rogers, indicating that my case has been escalated, and they would reach out to the webcam owner directly. This escalation gives me hope for more proactive measures being taken in the future.

Reaching out for Help

Thanks to the support and advice from the community, I have expanded my outreach. I’ve contacted various organizations, including the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Canadian Centre for cyber security. However, my attempts to reach Canadian authorities through the recommended phone line have not yet been successful, and it seems that using the emergency line might be my next option.

I greatly appreciate the encouragement and resources shared by others who have come across similar situations. Your support has been invaluable, and I am committed to staying informed as this situation develops.

My intention in sharing this experience is not just to highlight a personal concern but to raise awareness about the privacy implications surrounding IoT devices and the importance of acting swiftly when such breaches occur. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t hesitate to take action and reach out
