Stumbled upon public webcam stream of kid’s bedroom. Contacted ISP (ROGERS.com) – They couldn’t care less. What to do?

Urgent Concern: Unsecured Webcam Streaming from a Child’s Bedroom

In a recent unsettling discovery while browsing Shodan, I came across a public webcam offering a live feed from a child’s bedroom. Alarmed by this finding, I promptly contacted the Internet Service Provider (ISP) responsible, Rogers Communications, to address this concerning issue. However, I was met with a disheartening lack of action from their customer support.

Initial Attempt to Resolve the Issue

Upon contacting Rogers, I explained the gravity of the situation, pointing out that the webcam appears to belong to one of their customers. I expressed my deep concern as a parent, emphasizing that the owners of the webcam likely had no idea that their child’s private space was being broadcasted online. After a lengthy discussion, support staff insisted on referring me to a supervisor, but ultimately, I was advised to reach out to appropriate authorities, including those in my home country of Austria.

Frustration with Customer Support

This response left me perplexed. How could an ISP not take immediate action regarding a potential privacy violation of this magnitude? My hope was that they could communicate directly with the webcam owner or take steps to secure the feed themselves. Instead, I felt like my concerns were dismissed.

After much back and forth, I decided to escalate my efforts further and reached out to multiple organizations, including:
– Rogers’ abuse department
– The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
– The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security

Despite my attempts to contact the Canadian authorities through the phone number provided by Rogers, I encountered difficulties in reaching someone responsible for emergencies.

Community Support and Subsequent Updates

With the support of the online community, I received a glimmer of hope. An update on my situation reveals that the webcam owner has now been contacted, and the live feed is currently password protected. Additionally, I received an email from Rogers stating that they have escalated the matter and will reach out to the webcam owner directly.

I am thankful for all the encouraging messages and advice shared by the community. Together, we can highlight the importance of online privacy, especially concerning vulnerable individuals.

Moving Forward

As a tech professional, this experience underscores the significance of secure IoT devices and the responsibilities of ISPs. It is crucial that we remain vigilant and proactively address privacy concerns. For anyone encountering similar situations, I recommend documenting your interactions with ISPs and escalating the issue through formal channels, as well as engaging online communities for support.
