Urgent Concern: Public Webcam Stream of a Child’s Bedroom
Recently, I made a startling discovery while browsing Shodan, an IoT search engine that reveals security vulnerabilities. I stumbled upon a public webcam stream originating from a child’s bedroom. Given the sensitive nature of this finding, I felt compelled to take action. It appeared that the owner of the webcam is a customer of Rogers Communications in Canada, so I promptly reached out to their customer support for assistance.
Initial Contact with the ISP
Upon contacting Rogers, I was directed to a support representative who, after patiently listening to my concerns, referred me to a supervisor. This conversation stretched on for more than half an hour, yet yielded minimal progress. Though my situation was urgent, I was advised that there was little the ISP could do, as they suggested I contact authorities in either Canada or my home country, Austria.
I found it disheartening that a serious issue like a child’s privacy being compromised could be met with such indifference. As a parent of three, the thought of a child’s bedroom being broadcasted live prompted me to escalate my efforts.
Latest Updates
Since that initial contact, I have made some strides. On January 26, I contacted the webcam owner directly, and I’m pleased to report that the video feed is now password protected. Just as importantly, I received an email from Rogers informing me that my report was escalated, and they would reach out to the webcam owner as well. It’s encouraging to see that action is being taken, and I genuinely appreciate the support and suggestions I have received from the community.
In my quest for resolution, I’ve reached out to:
- Rogers’ abuse team
- The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada
- The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security
I also attempted to connect with Canadian authorities using the contact number provided by Rogers, but I encountered some difficulties. While this is not an emergency situation, I’m determined to follow up and find the appropriate path forward.

This troubling incident highlights the need for increased awareness regarding internet security, especially when it comes to the safety of children. I encourage anyone who stumbles upon similar situations to act quickly and responsibly. Your voice matters, and reaching out to the proper authorities can lead to significant changes.
