Stumbled upon public webcam stream of kid’s bedroom. Contacted ISP (ROGERS.com) – They couldn’t care less. What to do?

Title: Concern Over Public Webcam Feed: A Personal Experience

In today’s digital age, our privacy is constantly at risk, particularly when it comes to the accessibility of personal spaces via technology. Recently, I experienced a troubling incident that highlighted the potential dangers of public webcam streams—particularly when they involve children.

While browsing a security platform, I inadvertently discovered a live webcam feed broadcasting from a child’s bedroom. This alarming find indicated that the owner of the webcam was a customer of Rogers, a major Canadian Internet Service Provider. As a father, I was deeply concerned about the implications of this exposure. It seemed evident that the webcam owner was likely unaware of their device’s public access, which intensified my urgency to address the situation.

I promptly contacted Rogers’ support team, hoping they could intervene and notify the webcam owner. My initial interaction with their first-level support yielded little more than a suggestion to escalate my concerns to a supervisor. Under the impression that they would take my report seriously, I waited for half an hour, only to be disappointed by the follow-up discussion.

The supervisor acknowledged my concern but ultimately directed me to contact local authorities—neither of which were especially helpful in this transnational context. The notion that I would need to depend on the Austrian police to reach out to their Canadian counterparts felt disheartening. Frustrated, I highlighted how inadequate this approach seemed for such a critical issue.

However, there was a glimmer of hope. I subsequently reached out to several relevant organizations: Rogers’ abuse department, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and the Canadian Centre for cyber security. Despite the challenges in contacting Canadian authorities directly, I was determined to escalate this issue.

An encouraging update emerged shortly after I initiated these actions. The webcam owner was contacted, and the stream was secured with a password, hopefully preventing further unintended viewing. Additionally, I received communication from Rogers, indicating that they would pursue the issue with the webcam owner as well.

This experience underscores the importance of vigilance in our digitally connected world. It is vital that we report any suspicious activities, particularly those involving the safety and privacy of children. I sincerely appreciate the outpouring of support from those who responded to my post, as it reinforced the notion that community vigilance can make a difference.

Moving forward, I will continue to advocate for stronger measures and safety in online privacy, especially for vulnerable users. Let this serve as a reminder to all of us: when it comes to privacy and security in the digital space
