Tech skills are extremely important in cybersecurity. It’s also important to be calm under pressure.

The Dual Edge of Success in Cybersecurity: Technical Skills and Composure Under Pressure

In the ever-evolving field of cybersecurity, possessing strong technical abilities is undeniably crucial. Skills related to system administration, networking, development, and troubleshooting can significantly enhance your career prospects and effectiveness in the role. However, it’s equally important to emphasize another essential attribute: the ability to remain calm and composed in high-pressure scenarios.

When you find yourself in the midst of a Severity 1 incident, with a WebEx call flooded by inquiries from over 50 participants eager to understand the situation and who is addressing it, maintaining professionalism is key. Unfortunately, I’ve witnessed instances where even the most intelligent professionals succumbed to the pressures of the moment. Their anxiety or frustration rendered them ineffective when it mattered most. Conversely, I’ve observed highly skilled individuals allowing their tempers to flare, leading to unprofessional remarks that linger long after the incident has passed.

The takeaway here is straightforward but vital: technical expertise alone does not guarantee success in the cybersecurity domain. Professionalism and the ability to stay level-headed during critical situations are equally valuable. Personally, I would prefer collaborating with a newcomer who embodies friendliness and integrity over a technical genius who transforms into an adversary under stress.

In summary, if you’re aspiring to excel in the cybersecurity realm, remember that while honing your technical skills is imperative, nurturing your capacity to remain calm and respectful in challenging situations is just as significant for building a successful career.
