Today, after two months of purchasing a fully functional S23 Ultra from a seller, it suddenly appeared as reported stolen on Amazon…

Navigating the Complexities of Purchasing a Used Smartphone: A Cautionary Tale

In the fast-paced world of technology, acquiring a second-hand smartphone can sometimes lead to unexpected and unsettling situations. I recently found myself in such a predicament after purchasing a seemingly flawless Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra two months ago.

The Shock of a Stolen Report

Just as I returned from a long day at work, I was greeted by an alarming message on my phone screen. The notification, coming from Amazon, claimed that my device had been reported as lost or stolen. The message included an IMEI number and a passkey, which, disappointingly, did not work when I attempted to enter it.

The stark warning urged me to return the device: “This device has been reported as lost or stolen and must be returned to Amazon. Please call 08002797234 for details.” Upon researching online, I discovered a plethora of comments indicating this could be a common scam, particularly originating from the UK, yet connecting with individuals from regions such as China or India with poor language skills.

Seeking Resolution Amidst Anxiety

Feeling overwhelmed and uncertain, I hesitated to contact the number provided. I had invested $800 in this phone, purchasing it in early October, and the fear of having inadvertently bought a stolen item started to consume me. I reached out to the individual who sold me the phone via email, attaching a photo for reference, but initially received no response.

To add a twist to the story, I later received two emails from the seller, indicating his willingness to call and discuss the situation. He expressed ignorance regarding the issue but offered to either replace the device or refund my money. While his sincerity was somewhat reassuring, I remained hesitant, fearing the potential loss of both the phone and my peace of mind.

Attempting Fixes and New Developments

In an effort to resolve the issue, I attempted a factory reset and a cache wipe through recovery mode. However, the dreaded pop-up concerning the stolen report persisted, and I found myself trapped in a cycle of setup followed by the same alarming notification.

Eventually, the seller reached out again, explaining that he would consult a tech-savvy friend for further insights. Shortly thereafter, he proposed swapping my device for another S23 Ultra in better condition. Reluctantly, I agreed to meet him, and to my surprise, he did deliver on this new phone.
