Navigating the world of second-hand electronics can be a daunting task, especially when unexpected issues arise shortly after your purchase. Today, I want to share my personal experience of buying a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra that took a surprising turn.

Two months ago, I purchased what I thought was a perfectly functional S23 Ultra for $800 from a seller online. I was thrilled with my new gadget—until I returned home from work one evening to be greeted by an alarming notification. The screen flashed a message from Amazon stating that my device had been reported as lost or stolen. The notification displayed a passkey and an IMEI number, instructing me to contact a specified number for more information.

Naturally, I felt a surge of panic. A quick search confirmed that I wasn’t alone in my predicament; numerous comments online warned of similar scams, often involving questionable customer service interactions. Although I hadn’t yet called the listed number, I was feeling anxious about the implications of possibly owning a stolen phone. To make matters worse, my attempts to access the device were thwarted by the endless pop-ups, leaving me unable to use it.

In an effort to resolve the situation, I reached out to the seller via email, attaching a photo of the message I was receiving. Initially, there was no response, but moments later, he replied, indicating he was willing to assist. He suggested that he could either provide me with a replacement phone or issue a refund. However, his eagerness felt a bit dubious, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was losing control of the situation.

After some technical attempts to reset the phone—factory resetting and wiping the cache returned me to the same predicament—I received a call from the seller. He mentioned consulting a friend who had technical expertise, which didn’t clarify much, but he then offered to swap the device for another S23 Ultra in better condition.
