Unintended Oversight? No PC Titles Offer 1440p at 60FPS, Despite Expectations

The Curious Case of 1440p Resolution Locking at 24 FPS in PC Games

As a seasoned PC gamer, I have encountered a peculiar issue that many of us have likely brushed aside—1440p resolution serving up a mere 24 frames per second (FPS) in almost every game. Despite experimenting with various gaming PCs over the last decade, this baffling phenomenon persists.

Here’s the crux of the matter: when I shift any game’s resolution to 1080p, a wealth of framerate options become available—24 FPS, 30 FPS, 60 FPS, 120 FPS, and then some. When I make the leap to 4K resolution (2160p), the same holds true; I’m greeted with an expansive selection of framerates. However, the moment I land at 1440p, I’m inexplicably faced with a frustrating limitation—24 FPS, and nothing beyond.

The situation gets even more perplexing as I reflect on my gaming experience. Regardless of how many gaming rigs I’ve owned, the outcome remains consistent: 1440p appears shackled to a frame limit, with no options for 30 FPS, 50 FPS, 60 FPS, or higher. In fact, the only exception to this rule that I’ve encountered in recent years is with the title Genshin Impact, which curiously offers a full range of framerate choices at 1440p.

I’ve even ventured into the NVIDIA Control Panel to create custom profiles, hoping to remedy this issue, but my efforts yielded only partial success—these settings improved performance on Windows itself yet failed to alter the game’s restriction at 1440p.

Initially, I believed this limitation stemmed from a technical constraint of my setup, simply accepting it as standard practice in the gaming world. Recently, however, I’ve encountered discussions online that left me questioning this belief, with many gamers casually referencing 1440p at 60 FPS as an entirely normal expectation. This revelation prompted me to investigate further, only to discover that this peculiar framerate limitation is present across various gaming configurations and setups.

So, what’s behind this baffling scenario? I’ve predominantly used NVIDIA graphics cards, leading me to wonder if there’s a correlation. Is it a compatibility issue, or perhaps an oversight in game development?
