Troubleshooting Guide: When Your Nvidia GPU Disappears from Device Manager
If you’re finding yourself in a similar predicament as I, with your Nvidia GPU seemingly vanishing from the device manager, you’re certainly not alone. I recently encountered this frustrating issue while using my Asus ROG Strix GL553VW laptop, which is equipped with both an Intel HD Graphics 530 and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M. Unfortunately, I accidentally removed the Nvidia GPU from the device manager, and ever since, it has failed to reappear despite numerous attempts to rectify the situation.
Understanding the Issue
Initially, I tried a variety of troubleshooting steps in hopes of restoring functionality to my GPU, but regrettably, none yielded positive results:
-
Manual Driver Installation: I attempted to unzip the Nvidia drivers to engage in a manual installation of the initial components. However, the installer did not recognize my GPU.
-
Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU): Using DDU in safe mode, I thoroughly uninstalled the existing drivers, but subsequent reinstallation efforts were met with the same frustrating outcome.
-
Windows Reset: In an effort to eliminate any software-related issues, I executed a full reset of my Windows 10 operating system, but to no avail.
-
BIOS Battery Reinsert: As a last-ditch effort, I even removed and reinstituted the BIOS battery, hoping to resolve the recognition issue.
The Realization
After exhausting these options with little success, I came to a crucial realization: the problem likely extends beyond software. It appears to be a hardware issue, potentially stemming from defective soldering by the manufacturer. This is especially pertinent given that my laptop is a second-hand purchase and, unfortunately, is beyond the original manufacturer’s warranty period.
Moving Forward
While it’s disheartening to face such issues, I’ve accepted that the best course of action is to seek professional repairs to restore my laptop’s functionality. Although it may require some financial investment, ensuring that the hardware is properly addressed is paramount.
