Unintentionally Deleted Nvidia Graphics Card from Device Manager and It No Longer Appears

Troubleshooting Nvidia GPU Issues on an Asus Rog Strix GL553VW: A Personal Experience

Is your high-performance laptop suddenly underperforming due to a missing Nvidia GPU? If you’re facing a similar issue to what I recently encountered with my Asus Rog Strix GL553VW, you’re not alone. I had a perplexing situation where my Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M disappeared from the device manager after I accidentally removed it. To add to the frustration, no amount of troubleshooting seemed to bring it back.

Background on My Setup

For context, my laptop is equipped with two graphics processors: the integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 and the dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M. The latter is crucial for gaming and graphic-intensive tasks, making its sudden disappearance a significant problem.

Steps I Tried to Resolve the Issue

In an attempt to rectify the situation, I diligently worked through several potential solutions:

  1. Manual Driver Installation: I downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers and attempted a manual installation, starting with the basic setup files. Unfortunately, the installers did not recognize the missing GPU.

  2. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU): I used DDU in safe mode to completely remove any remnants of the Nvidia software, hoping for a fresh start. This process did not yield any success either, as the GPU continued to be undetected.

  3. Windows 10 Reset: As a more drastic measure, I reset my Windows 10 operating system. However, this too failed to restore the GPU.

  4. BIOS Battery Reseating: In one last effort, I carefully reseated the BIOS battery, thinking it might reset any internal configurations that could be affecting detection. Sadly, this approach also fell short of solving the problem.

Acknowledging the Reality

Despite trying every option within my grasp, the GPU remained absent from the system settings. After extensive research and discussion, I came to a sobering conclusion: this is likely a hardware issue. It seems that the root cause stems from poor soldering during manufacturing, exacerbated by the fact that I purchased the laptop second-hand and it is now beyond the manufacturer’s warranty.

The Next Steps

Faced with this unfortunate reality, I’ve decided the most practical solution is to seek professional repair. While it might entail an additional cost, I believe it’s the best course of action to restore my laptop’s functionality.

Conclusion

If you’re in a similar predicament, I hope my experience
