Variation 13: “Creating a Cybersecurity Learning App Inspired by Duolingo for My Master’s Thesis”

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Learning

Hello, readers!

I am excited to share an innovative project that I’ve been working on as part of my master’s thesis – an iOS application called SecureMind! This app is designed to simplify the understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals for the general public, taking inspiration from the engaging learning model of Duolingo.

The Concept Behind SecureMind

My research focuses on how mobile microlearning can effectively motivate individuals to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge. SecureMind provides a platform for users to voluntarily share their app usage data, which aids in assessing the effectiveness of various features.

How It Works

SecureMind organizes cybersecurity topics into easily digestible chapters and sections. Users begin their journey by assessing their prior knowledge, allowing them to compare their skills before and after completing the content. Each section delivers a concise overview of essential cybersecurity concepts followed by a quiz designed to reinforce learning and ensure comprehension.

To promote long-term retention, a dynamic library of previously learned information is unlocked after users finish their first chapter. This library expands with each additional chapter, serving as a valuable resource for ongoing review. Additionally, I regularly update the app with brief articles on the latest cybersecurity news to keep users informed and engaged.

Gamification: Making Learning Fun

Understanding that traditional video courses can often be tedious, I’ve incorporated two significant gamification elements to enhance user experience. The Security IQ system incentivizes users with points for mastering fundamentals, utilizing the library, and engaging with the news articles. As users become more active in learning, their IQ increases. However, this IQ is dynamic and is affected by inactivity, making it vital for users to stay engaged.

Furthermore, users earn coins that allow for customization options within the app, such as altering the app icon and personalizing notification titles, adding a fun, interactive layer to the learning process.

Expertise and Content Validation

Recognizing the challenges of providing sound security advice, the content of the app is based on the DiFü framework, which is supported by the German government. This content has been meticulously reviewed by my supervisor to ensure its accuracy and relevance.

I invite you to try out SecureMind and participate in this learning journey! Your feedback would not only be invaluable to my research but would also contribute to making cybersecurity knowledge more accessible to everyone.
