Variation 19: “Creating a Cybersecurity Education App Inspired by Duolingo for My Master’s Thesis”

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Learning Cybersecurity

In today’s digital age, understanding cybersecurity is crucial for everyone. To bridge the knowledge gap, I am excited to introduce SecureMind, an innovative iOS application designed to teach the fundamentals of cybersecurity in an engaging and user-friendly manner. This project is a culmination of my master’s thesis, which explores the effectiveness of mobile microlearning in motivating individuals to acquire essential cybersecurity skills.

Inspired by the beloved Duolingo model, SecureMind organizes cybersecurity concepts into manageable chapters and sections, making learning more accessible to the general public. The app starts by assessing users’ existing knowledge and follows up with a comprehensive test after each chapter, allowing users to track their progress and improvements.

How SecureMind Works

Each section of the app delivers concise information followed by quizzes to reinforce understanding. Once users complete the first chapter, they unlock a library of previously learned material, with additional content becoming available as they advance through the app. This feature ensures that learners can revisit foundational concepts anytime, fostering long-term knowledge retention.

In addition to educational content, SecureMind provides updates on current cybersecurity news, keeping users informed about the latest developments in the field.

Engaging Gamification Features

To combat the monotony often associated with traditional learning methods, SecureMind incorporates gamification elements that make the learning experience lively and motivating. The Security IQ system awards users points for engaging with core content, utilizing the library, and reading news articles. As users stay active, their IQ level increases, but inactivity will lead to a decrease in their score, encouraging consistent engagement.

Moreover, users earn coins through learning achievements, which can be used to personalize their app experience—customizing app icons and choosing unique notification titles are just a few of the fun options available.

Foundation in Reliable Content

Recognizing the challenges of delivering accurate security advice, I based the app’s content on the DiFü framework, a resource supported by the German government. My supervisor also provided thorough reviews, ensuring the information remains reliable and valuable.

Get Involved!

I invite you to give SecureMind a try and explore the world of cybersecurity in a fun, accessible way. Your feedback and participation are crucial as they will aid my research in understanding user engagement and the effectiveness of mobile learning.
