Version 1: Unintentionally Deleted My Nvidia Graphics Card from Device Manager and It Disappeared Completely

Troubleshooting GPU Recognition Issues on My Asus ROG Strix GL553VW

If you own a gaming laptop, you’re likely familiar with the pivotal role that a dedicated graphics processing unit (GPU) plays in delivering smooth gameplay and visual fidelity. Recently, I encountered a frustrating dilemma with my Asus ROG Strix GL553VW, which features both Intel HD Graphics 530 and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M. After mistakenly removing the Nvidia GPU from the device manager, it has failed to appear again, regardless of my extensive troubleshooting efforts.

The Situation

After my accidental removal, I attempted multiple methods to restore the GPU’s functionality:

  1. Manual Installation: I extracted the Nvidia drivers and tried to execute the initial installation step manually, yet the installer did not recognize my GPU.

  2. Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU): I used DDU in safe mode to ensure that all traces of the Nvidia drivers were removed, followed by a clean reinstallation of the drivers—again, to no avail.

  3. Windows Reset: I took the drastic step of resetting Windows 10 to eliminate any potential Software issues affecting GPU recognition.

  4. BIOS Battery Reseating: In a last-ditch effort, I removed and reintegrated the BIOS battery, hoping it would resolve the problem.

However, despite these attempts and numerous restarts, my Nvidia GPU remains undetected, rendering my laptop significantly less functional for gaming and other graphical tasks.

A Shift in Understanding

As the hours passed and I researched potential solutions, I came to a realization: this issue is likely rooted in hardware, possibly due to bad soldering from the manufacturer. Given that my laptop is a second-hand purchase and is beyond the warranty period, I’ve concluded that seeking professional repair is the most viable path forward, despite the cost.

Moving Forward

If you find yourself in a similar predicament, my advice would be to carefully assess the situation before diving into extensive Software troubleshooting. Sometimes, what appears to be a Software hiccup may actually point to deeper hardware issues.

I sincerely appreciate the suggestions and support from the community as I navigated this unexpected challenge. If you’re experiencing GPU recognition problems, don’t hesitate to reach out—your contribution might just be the lifeline someone needs!
