Navigating the Uncharted Waters of Cybersecurity: A Newcomer’s Challenge

Embarking on a new job can be both exciting and daunting, especially when unexpected responsibilities come into play. Recently, I found myself in a situation that many professionals might dread: I’ve been assigned the critical task of managing cybersecurity at my new workplace, despite having little knowledge in this area.

When I accepted my position, I was under the impression that my role would involve assisting with various computer-related tasks. However, it soon became clear that I would be the go-to person for cybersecurity—a responsibility that no one had previously managed. To complicate matters further, our company currently lacks any established security protocols or measures.

While it’s a relief that our organization isn’t currently under heavy scrutiny, there’s an imminent expectation for us to elevate our security posture as we anticipate increased visibility within our industry. The plan includes hiring a security consultant in the near future, but I’m determined to ensure that we present ourselves as informed and prepared before their arrival.

As someone with no formal training, certifications, or extensive experience in the cybersecurity realm, I am asking myself: where do I even begin? The task feels overwhelming, but I am committed to rising to the occasion.

Fortunately, I have reached out to a community for guidance and received an outpouring of helpful suggestions. Their insights have given me hope that I can navigate these choppy waters and establish a foundational security framework for our company.
