In today’s digital landscape, even a moment of inattention can lead to unintended security threats. Recently, a concerning incident occurred involving my niece and my mom’s laptop, illustrating the importance of safe internet habits and prompt actions in response to potential malware.

The Incident

While browsing the internet, my 13-year-old niece attempted to access a movie not available on legitimate platforms. Unfortunately, she ended up on a site known for distributing unsafe content. This encounter led to an automatic download of a program called ‘Opera GX’—a popular gaming browser, but not the ideal outcome from that type of website.

Upon realizing something was amiss, my niece promptly informed my mom, who wisely chose to leave the laptop untouched until I arrived about 20 minutes later.

Immediate Response

Once I was informed of the situation, I took several steps to address the potential threat:

File Deletion: I began by clearing out the suspicious ‘Opera GX’ file from the Downloads folder. This quick action helped eliminate any immediate trace of the problem.
Security Scan: Next, I ran a comprehensive scan using Windows Security. This built-in tool is a first line of defense against basic threats and can identify common issues.
