While Quarantined, I Tried Playing 4K VR Videos from Pornhub Premium for Research—But They Didn’t Work

Troubleshooting 4K VR Video Playback Issues: A Quarantine Dilemma

As many of us have found ourselves navigating through extended quarantine periods, exploring new hobbies and interests has become a popular pastime. In my case, I decided to delve into research related to virtual reality by utilizing a Pornhub Premium subscription that offers the ability to download high-quality videos for both research and entertainment. However, what I anticipated to be an engaging experience quickly turned into a frustrating technical challenge.

Upon downloading several 4K VR videos, each over 1GB in size, I encountered an issue: the videos played without any visual content, revealing nothing but a stark green line at the top of the screen, or worse, an entirely green display. The only semblance of functionality was the accompanying audio, but even that was disrupted, causing the player to freeze intermittently. I attempted to view these videos on both VLC Media Player and MPC-HC, only to hit a wall—was I dealing with corrupted files?

My main objective was to use these videos with the Mobile VR Station app on my mobile VR headset. Unfortunately, the app couldn’t handle them either, displaying a frustrating “Cannot decode” error message.

After undertaking some troubleshooting, I discovered that other VR videos I downloaded from various sources played back without issue, indicating that the problem was confined to my recent downloads from Pornhub Premium.

An Update on the Situation

In a surprising turn of events, I realized that the playback dilemma was specifically tied to the Mobile VR Station app on iOS. While the videos performed flawlessly on Windows using the default video player and even in VLC after tweaking some hardware encoding settings, the mobile experience was lacking.

On the quest for a solution, I decided to try out the SKYBOX VR Video Player for iOS. Initially, it seemed like a promising alternative; however, I was met with another setback—though the audio played without a hitch, the video displayed a persistent black screen.

Seeking Solutions

If you find yourself facing similar issues with 4K VR media or have any recommendations for robust mobile video players that can handle high-resolution VR files, your insights would be invaluable. I’m eager to ensure that this quarantine research project can move from mere audio experiences to complete immersion.
