Important Announcement: r/Cybersecurity to Go Private in Protest of Reddit’s API Policy Changes

In a proactive response to overwhelming feedback from our community, the r/Cybersecurity subreddit will transition to a private status from June 12th to June 14th. This decision stems from growing concerns over Reddit’s recent changes regarding API access that negatively impact third-party applications.

The majority of our members have expressed a desire for Reddit to reconsider its stance on limiting API access and effectively diminishing the role of third-party apps. Absent any reversal on Reddit’s part regarding these alterations, we find it necessary to participate in a temporary blackout as a form of protest.

During this blackout period, r/Cybersecurity will be inaccessible to anyone who is not a member or who is not logged into a Reddit account. We strongly encourage the community to abstain from visiting Reddit altogether during this time. We believe that collective action can send a powerful message.

We invite you to share your thoughts on how we can make the most of this blackout. Suggestions might include limiting new posts and comments, guiding members toward alternative platforms such as Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky, or even creating community discussion threads. Your voice is vital as we navigate this situation together.

As we await Reddit’s response—whether it leads to a change in policy or further actions that might compromise community trust—we want to express our gratitude for the opportunity to serve as moderators. It’s been a responsibility we take seriously, and we appreciate your support.

  1. Thank you for sharing this important announcement. As a technical support engineer, I understand the frustrations that come with API policy changes impacting third-party applications and community engagement tools.

If you’re experiencing issues accessing Reddit or r/Cybersecurity during the blackout period, please keep in mind that the community will be temporarily private, meaning only logged-in members will be able to view content.

To stay updated and participate, consider the following:

    • Use official Reddit channels for updates or announcements from moderators and Reddit staff.
    • Explore alternative platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, or Bluesky for community discussion and collaboration, as suggested in the post.
    • Set up notifications for any official subreddit mod announcements or related news to ensure you don’t miss critical updates.
    • If you encounter persistent access issues once the blackout is over, clear your browser cache or try accessing Reddit via a different browser or device to rule out local issues.

If you have specific technical concerns or experience unusual behavior regarding API integrations or third-party apps outside the blackout timeframe, please provide more details so we can assist further.
