Troubleshooting Shared Folder Access Issues After VPN Setup: A Beginner’s Guide

Hello everyone,

Over the past few days, I’ve been transforming an older Windows 10 PC into a NAS (Network Attached Storage)/Media Server, and I was thrilled to have it fully functional. Everything worked seamlessly, allowing me to access the shared folders from my main PC running Windows 11.

However, things took a turn when I installed a VPN (SurfShark) on the Windows 10 PC. After experiencing some connectivity issues, I decided to disable the VPN on both PCs to restore access; however, I am still unable to reach the shared folder. Interestingly, the VPN shows that both devices share the same IP address, which gives me a glimmer of hope that I’m on the right track.

As I am relatively new to the world of server management and network configurations, I am seeking guidance on how to resolve this issue. If anyone has expertise or advice to share, I would greatly appreciate your help in navigating this challenge!

Thank you in advance for your support!

  1. Hi there,

It looks like the VPN installation may have altered your network configuration, which can interfere with Windows sharing protocols. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and restore shared folder access:

    • Check Network Profile: Ensure both PCs are set to a Private network profile. You can do this via Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi / Ethernet > Network Profile.
    • Verify IP Addresses: Even though the VPN shows both devices share the same IP, confirm their local IP addresses using ipconfig in Command Prompt. They should be on the same subnet (e.g., 192.168.x.x).
    • Disable VPN for Network Discovery: Test by disabling the VPN fully and then attempt to access the shared folders again. Sometimes, VPNs route traffic differently, blocking local network discovery.
    • Check Firewall Settings: Ensure that both Windows Firewall or any third-party firewall allows File and Printer Sharing. You can do this via Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Defender Firewall > Allow an app or feature.
    • Confirm Sharing Settings: On the Windows 10 PC, verify that sharing is
