Insights from a Cybersecurity Expert: An Invitation to Engage

Greetings, readers! I’m Nick Percoco, the Chief Security Officer at Kraken, and I’m excited to share my insights and answer your questions about cybersecurity, particularly in the realm of cryptocurrency. With over 25 years of experience in security and technology, I’ve dedicated my career to protecting digital assets and understanding the intricacies of cyber threats.

My Journey in Cybersecurity

My journey in technology began early; I taught myself how to code at the tender age of 7 on a Timex Sinclair 1000, and spent my teenage years navigating the vibrant BBS landscape in the Chicago area using Commodore 64s and Intel 386 PCs running Linux. These formative experiences ignited my passion for cybersecurity and opened up various opportunities over the years.

Before assuming my role at Kraken, I held positions as Chief Security Officer at Uptake, a pioneering industrial AI company, and as Vice President of Global Services at Rapid7, a comprehensive cybersecurity service provider. My experience in these roles provided me with invaluable insights into security breaches, malware challenges, mobile security, and emerging trends in information security.

Conferences and Engagements

I’ve had the privilege of speaking at renowned conferences including Black Hat, DEF CON, and OWASP. My engagements also extend to high-level discussions with organizations such as the Department of Homeland Security, US-CERT, Interpol, and the United States Secret Service. These interactions have enriched my perspective on the global cybersecurity landscape and the ever-evolving threats we face.

As a long-time participant in the Chicago hacker community, I also founded THOTCON—a hacker conference that has been a staple of the community since its inception. In 2023, we will celebrate our 12th event, bringing together some of the brightest minds in cybersecurity.
