Discovered a live public webcam feed of a child’s room; reached out to ROGERS ISP but received no support—what are my options now?

Urgent Concern: Public Webcam Streaming from a Child’s Bedroom

I recently encountered a troubling situation that has prompted me to seek advice and support from the community. While exploring the website Shodan, which specializes in identifying security vulnerabilities in Internet of Things (IoT) devices, I came across a live stream from a public webcam located in a young child’s bedroom. Alarmed by this discovery, I quickly realized that the owner of this webcam is a customer of Rogers, a Canadian internet service provider.

Reaching Out for Help

Understanding the urgency of the matter, I decided to contact Rogers’ customer support to inform them about the situation, hopeful that they would take immediate action. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. After being transferred several times during my consultation, I was ultimately told that I needed to contact local authorities. This was incredibly frustrating, particularly because I don’t reside in Canada and felt powerless in this situation.

“At that point, I expressed my concern that the individual broadcasting their child’s room likely had no idea what was happening, and I was merely trying to help,” I explained during the chat. However, despite my persistent efforts to explain the seriousness of the issue, I was left feeling as though my concerns were not taken seriously.

Attempts to Resolve the Issue

In a bid to escalate the situation, I reached out to [email protected], the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, and the Canadian Centre for cyber security. Additionally, I attempted to contact Canadian authorities using the phone number provided on Rogers’ website but encountered difficulties getting through. I plan to try again, as the urgency of this matter cannot be understated.

Community Updates and Support

In a recent update, I discovered that the webcam owner was indeed contacted, and as a result, the video feed has been secured with a password. Furthermore, Rogers has reached out to me, indicating that they are treating this issue seriously and will also be contacting the webcam owner directly.

I am incredibly grateful for all the support and suggestions I’ve received thus far from the community. It’s reassuring to see how many individuals are genuinely concerned about the safety and privacy of children in such a vulnerable situation.

Moving Forward

While this situation has been challenging, it highlights a critical issue regarding online privacy, particularly for children. The public exposure of sensitive areas such as a child’s bedroom is not just alarming but poses significant risks. As I continue to navigate this issue, I will

  1. That is an extremely serious situation, and it’s good to see you taking immediate action. Given that Rogers has already been contacted and has responded, here are additional steps you can consider:

    • Continue documenting all communications with Rogers, authorities, and other relevant agencies for record-keeping and potential follow-up.
    • Inform local law enforcement agencies in your country or the country where the webcam owner resides, especially if this is a child exploitation concern. Many jurisdictions have specialized cybercrime units that can assist.
    • Encourage the owner of the webcam or the service provider (Rogers) to formally report the incident to Cybertip.ca or equivalent child exploitation reporting centers.
    • If you have technical expertise, consider reporting the vulnerability to security platforms like Shodan or other cybersecurity organizations, so they can help in the investigation or mitigation.
    • Understand that since the camera feed was publicly accessible, the device owner should immediately change all default passwords, update firmware, and review their security practices to prevent further exposure.
    • Maintain your vigilance and keep the community informed, respecting privacy laws and guidelines to avoid unwarranted accusations.
