For my graduate thesis, I developed a language learning app focused on cybersecurity, inspired by the design of Duolingo.

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Learning

As part of my master’s thesis, I am excited to share the launch of my new iOS application, SecureMind. This innovative app aims to teach cybersecurity fundamentals to users from all backgrounds, drawing inspiration from the effective learning methods established by Duolingo.

What is SecureMind?

SecureMind is designed to empower individuals with essential cybersecurity knowledge through the format of mobile microlearning. By breaking down complex concepts into manageable sections, users can engage with the material in a way that fits their schedules. The app not only provides valuable information but also allows for voluntary sharing of usage data, which supports the evaluation of user engagement with various features.

Key Features of SecureMind

  1. Structured Learning: The content is divided into chapters and sections, which makes it easy for users to progress through the material. Each new chapter starts with an assessment of the user’s prior knowledge and concludes with a test on what they have learned, enabling them to track their own improvement.

  2. Knowledge Retention Tools: After completing the first chapter, users unlock a growing library of previously learned materials. This feature is designed to reinforce knowledge retention as they continue to learn more.

  3. Current Events: To keep users informed about the ever-evolving field of cybersecurity, I also provide short updates and articles on recent developments in the sector.

Engaging and Interactive Learning

To ensure that learning remains engaging rather than monotonous, I have incorporated two key gamification elements:

  • Security IQ System: The app rewards users with points for engaging with the content, utilizing the library, and reading news articles. Active participation is encouraged, as maintaining a high Security IQ becomes increasingly challenging with inactivity.

  • Customizable Experience: Users can earn coins through their engagement, which can be used to personalize the app interface, including customizing the app icon and setting unique titles for notifications.

Evidence-Based Content

Recognizing the complexity of providing effective security advice, I partnered with the DiFĂĽ initiative, backed by the German government, to form the foundation of the app’s content. This material was further reviewed and refined under the guidance of my academic supervisor.

  1. Thank you for sharing your innovative project!

SecureMind sounds like a fantastic initiative that combines gamification with cybersecurity education, making complex topics more accessible and engaging. If you’re looking for technical support or advice, here are some tips:

    • Data Privacy & Sharing: Since your app allows voluntary sharing of usage data, ensure that you incorporate transparent privacy policies and obtain explicit user consent, especially considering GDPR compliance if your users are in the EU.
    • Content Validation: Collaborating with initiatives like DiFĂĽ is great for credible content. Consider implementing a review system within the app to keep your educational material up-to-date and accurate.
    • Gamification Elements: To maintain user engagement, consider implementing tiered reward systems and periodic challenges that motivate continued learning.
    • Accessibility: Ensure your app design includes accessibility features such as adjustable text size, screen reader compatibility, and easy navigation to reach a wider audience.
    • Testing & Feedback: Regular beta testing with real users can help identify usability issues and refine the gamification mechanics for better retention and motivation.

If you need assistance with app optimization, server integration, or security best practices, feel free to reach out. Best of luck with SecureMind—it’s an exciting project with impactful potential in cybersecurity education
