For my graduate thesis, I developed a language-learning cybersecurity app inspired by Duolingo.

Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Education

In today’s digital age, understanding cybersecurity is more crucial than ever. To address this need, I am excited to introduce my newly developed iOS application, SecureMind, designed to educate users on cybersecurity fundamentals. Inspired by the engaging learning style of Duolingo, this app forms a key component of my master’s thesis, which explores how mobile microlearning can motivate individuals to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge.

What is SecureMind?

SecureMind is dedicated to making cybersecurity accessible to everyone. The app organizes topics into easily digestible chapters and sections, allowing users to build their knowledge gradually. At the outset of each chapter, users are presented with a pre-assessment to gauge their existing understanding of the material. After completing the chapter, users can take a follow-up test to measure their progress, providing a clear insight into how much they’ve learned.

Each section consists of concise information snippets followed by quizzes aimed at testing comprehension, ensuring users can reinforce their learning as they progress.

Innovative Features

One of the highlights of SecureMind is the library functionality, which becomes accessible after completing the first chapter. This library expands with each subsequent chapter, giving users the ability to revisit and build upon previously learned concepts. Furthermore, I strive to keep users informed by periodically publishing concise cybersecurity news articles, enriching the app’s content offering.

Gamification for Better Engagement

Understanding that traditional learning methods can often be uninspiring, I aimed to create an engaging experience through gamification. SecureMind includes two primary features to keep users motivated:

  1. Security IQ System: Users earn points for engaging with the app’s materials, utilizing the information library, and reading the latest cybersecurity news. This dynamic system rewards active participation but also introduces a challenge—staying engaged is necessary to maintain and grow one’s Security IQ.

  2. Customizable Rewards: Users can collect coins through their interactions, which can be spent on personalizing the app experience, such as customizing icons or selecting unique titles for notifications.

Evidence-Based Content

To ensure the app provides accurate and valuable information, I utilized the DiFĂĽ Digital License developed in collaboration with the German government as a foundational guide. This content has been thoroughly reviewed by my academic supervisor, ensuring reliability and relevance.

  1. Thank you for sharing your innovative project, SecureMind. It’s impressive to see how you’ve integrated gamification and microlearning principles into a cybersecurity educational app. To assist you further, here are some technical suggestions:

    • App Accessibility: Ensure the app adheres to accessibility standards, such as providing alternative text for images and ensuring sufficient contrast for readability, to make it inclusive for all users.
    • Content Management: Consider implementing a dynamic content management system (CMS) or backend to easily update news articles and add new chapters without requiring app updates.
    • Data Tracking & Privacy: Implement secure data tracking for user progress, points, and rewards, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations like GDPR or CCPA. Use encrypted storage and secure API calls.
    • Gamification System: Optimize the Security IQ and rewards system to prevent abuse. Consider server-side validation for points and coins to maintain integrity.
    • Offline Functionality: Since the app involves learning and quizzes, consider enabling offline access to key content and synchronization once the device is online.
    • Testing & Feedback: Regularly
