Introducing SecureMind: A Gamified Approach to Cybersecurity Learning

I’m excited to share the launch of my new iOS application, SecureMind, a unique educational tool designed to teach the fundamentals of cybersecurity to users of all backgrounds. Developed as part of my master’s thesis, this app draws inspiration from the engaging learning methods utilized by Duolingo, focusing on making complex topics accessible and enjoyable.

What is SecureMind?

SecureMind is not just another educational app; it’s a carefully crafted platform that leverages mobile microlearning to motivate individuals to enhance their cybersecurity knowledge. As part of my research, I’ve included a feature that allows users to voluntarily share their app usage data, helping me analyze the effectiveness of various components and user engagement levels.

How Does It Work?

The content within SecureMind is structured into logical chapters and sections, each targeting specific cybersecurity concepts. Upon entering a chapter, users undergo a pre-assessment to gauge their existing knowledge, followed by a post-assessment to measure improvement after completing the chapter. Each section comprises concise information snippets paired with quizzes to reinforce comprehension and retention.

Once users complete the first chapter, they can access a growing library of previously learned material, enabling continual review and reinforcement of their knowledge. To keep users updated on the evolving cybersecurity landscape, I also share short news articles related to the field.

Gamification for Enhanced Engagement

Understanding that traditional learning methods can often be dull, I integrated gamification elements to keep users motivated and engaged. The Security IQ system rewards users with points for completing sections, utilizing the knowledge library, and reading the latest cybersecurity news. Active participation not only increases their IQ but also presents a challenge—as inactivity leads to a gradual decrease in their score. Additionally, users earn coins, which can be used to personalize their app experience, from customizing icons to setting unique notification titles.

A Solid Foundation

Creating effective cybersecurity advice can be daunting, but I laid the groundwork for SecureMind using the content from the DiFü initiative, supported by the German government, which was further reviewed by my academic supervisor to ensure its accuracy and relevance.
