HELP!!! Samsung HD204UI makes short buzzing noise a couple times then stops working when powered on

Urgent Help Needed: Troubleshooting a Samsung HD204UI Hard Drive After Accidentally Dropping It

If you’ve ever faced the panic of losing access to important data, you can likely empathize with my current predicament. Recently, while reassembling my HDD enclosure, I accidentally dropped my Samsung HD204UI hard drive. This seemingly minor mishap has led to a series of distressing events, and now I find myself in urgent need of assistance.

Upon powering on the drive after the fall, it emitted a troubling buzzing noise that occurred a couple of times before it briefly paused. This pattern repeated itself, leading me to think something might be seriously wrong. Today, I attempted to place the hard drive into a docking station in hopes of reviving it, but the buzzing continued and ultimately resulted in the drive shutting off entirely. I’ve attached a video documenting this unsettling situation for reference.

This particular hard drive holds crucial backups for my iMac, particularly as I’ve just installed macOS Monterey and urgently require access to these files for restoration. I decided to boot from a Monterey installer USB and use Disk Utility for diagnosis, but unfortunately, the computer failed to recognize the drive (as shown in the attached screenshot).

While taking the hard drive to a professional data recovery service is an option, I hesitate due to the steep costs involved. Therefore, I’m reaching out to the community to see if anyone has experience with at-home methods for reviving a malfunctioning hard drive. Any guidance, tips, or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I’m desperate to retrieve my backups and restore my files on my iMac!

  1. It sounds like your hard drive may have sustained physical damage from the drop, which can sometimes cause the internal components, such as the platters or read/write heads, to become misaligned or damaged. The short buzzing noise you’re hearing is often indicative of a “stiction” issue or motor problems, which can sometimes be attempted to resolve via careful at-home methods, but caution is advised.

Before attempting any DIY fixes, ensure that you do not further damage the drive by trying to “force” it to spin up. If you are comfortable with hardware, you can try the following:

    • Inspect the Drive: Carefully check for any visible physical damage or loose components.
    • Gentle Spin: Sometimes gently spinning the drive platters with a plastic or rubber tool can help free up the motor, but this carries risk of further damage.
    • Hardware Diagnostics: Use tools like HDDScan or Smartmontools to run diagnostics if the drive spins up temporarily.
    • Data Recovery Preparations: If the drive starts to spin or respond intermittently, consider creating a raw disk image or clone
