Troubleshooting Mysterious PC Noises: Seeking Solutions

Recently, I’ve been dealing with an unusual issue that’s been nagging at my sanity: an intermittent sound coming from my computer. This started happening a couple of weeks ago, and it’s becoming increasingly frustrating.

To provide some context, I’m running a freshly installed setup featuring a 9800x3d processor alongside a 9070xt graphics card. The curious thing is that the sound occurs sporadically; it’s not limited to gaming sessions, though I did manage to capture it while I was immersed in a game.

You can listen to the sound here: Watch the Clip.

In my quest to identify the source of this perplexing noise, I’ve meticulously reviewed all my applications and running processes, scrutinized overlays, and yet I remain clueless about what this sound signifies.

I’m reaching out to the community in hopes that someone can help me diagnose and resolve this issue. If you’ve experienced something similar or have any insights, I would greatly appreciate your input. Let’s work together to unravel this mystery!

  1. Hi,

It sounds like you’re experiencing intermittent noises that could be caused by various hardware components. Based on your description and setup, here are some troubleshooting steps I recommend:

    • Check your hardware temperatures: Overheating components like the CPU or GPU can sometimes cause fans to spin up suddenly, producing distinct sounds. Use a tool like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to monitor temperatures.
    • Inspect your fans and vents: Dust buildup can cause fans to operate noisily. Ensure fans are clean and operating smoothly. Consider manually spinning the fans to see if they spin freely.
    • Test the power supply: A failing or inconsistent power supply can generate unusual noises. If possible, try swapping with a known good PSU.
    • Monitor for coil whine: Electronics like GPUs sometimes produce coil whine under load. This is usually faint but can vary. If the noise coincides with high GPU utilization, this could be the cause.
    • Update drivers and BIOS: Ensure all your system drivers, especially GPU and chipset drivers, are up to date. Sometimes firmware or driver updates address hardware noise issues.
    • Check for software interference: Since you noticed the noise during gaming and other times, observe if certain applications or background processes correlate with the noise.
