I called my friend (iPhone to iPhone) and instead of his voicemail, an answering service answered.

Unexpected Encounter: A Mysterious Call with AI

Recently, I had an unusual experience during a phone call with a friend that left me both puzzled and intrigued. It all began innocently when I dialed my friend’s number, expecting to be directed to his voicemail, as one typically would. Instead, I found myself greeted by an unfamiliar voice from an answering service.

Initially, I thought little of it. After all, many individuals utilize answering services for various reasons. I left my message and moved on with my day. Later, I decided to text my friend to inquire, “Did you get an answering service?” to which he replied, “No! Others have mentioned this too. I’ll call you during my break.”

A little while later, my friend returned my call. On discussing the oddity of the answering service, we both shrugged it off as a mere glitch. Curious to get to the bottom of it, I attempted to call him again. Interestingly, the same answering service picked up.

“Hello, this is Sophie from a messaging service for your recipient. May I have your name?” she asked in a tone that felt more robotic than reassuring.

I hesitated but responded with a pseudonym. When she inquired about the recipient’s name, I tried to clarify what company she represented.

“This is a messaging service for your recipient. My role is to take your message,” she reiterated, almost mechanically.

Feeling a bit baffled, I expressed my confusion, questioning the existence of this “Jim Bob Rainbow” and the service she was mentioning. It was at this point that the conversation took a turn; Sophie’s demeanor shifted, and she became somewhat aggressive.

“I’m just trying to do my job to deliver your message to Jim Bob Rainbow. What message do you want to leave?” she barked.

I felt a twinge of discomfort due to her tone and said so. Perhaps I shouldn’t have, but her abruptness irked me. Her response was curt: “Have a nice day,” followed by a disconnection.

What transpired in this bizarre interaction was unsettling. I couldn’t shake the feeling that “Sophie” might have been an AI rather than a human operator.

What in the world just happened?

I texted my friend once more, urging him to call me back. He did, completely baffled himself. He expressed his intent to contact his service provider to figure this out.
