Navigating Cybersecurity Responsibilities: A Newcomer’s Perspective

Taking on new responsibilities in a job can be both exhilarating and daunting, especially when those duties involve the critical domain of cybersecurity. Recently, I embarked on a new career journey, eager to contribute my skills in technology as we discussed during my interview. However, I soon discovered that I was thrust into the unexpected role of managing cybersecurity for the organization. In a twist that caught me off guard, I found that there were minimal protocols in place for safeguarding our digital assets.

Admittedly, my background in computer-related tasks does not extend into the realm of cybersecurity specifically, and I was unprepared for the extent of this responsibility. Until now, no one had been assigned to oversee these crucial aspects, leaving me in the unusual position of having to shape an effective security strategy with minimal resources and experience.

Fortunately, our company is not currently under high scrutiny, but we anticipate an increase in visibility and are committed to fortifying our defenses ahead of time. Although we plan to engage a security consultant down the line, there is a pressing need to ensure we present a competent and informed front when the time comes. I am eager to make headway in this area before bringing in an expert, so I find myself questioning where to even begin.

As I embark on this journey into cybersecurity, I realize that many others may have faced a similar situation.
