Troubleshooting a Mysterious Rumbling Sound from My PC: A Call for Help

For the past two months, I’ve been experiencing a perplexing rumbling noise coming from my PC, and I’m hoping to tap into the community’s knowledge for some guidance. Initially, I suspected that it may be due to a failing fan or perhaps a component jostling against another part inside the casing. After hours of searching online for videos showcasing similar PC sounds, I have yet to find anything that matches what I’m hearing.

I captured a couple of videos that clearly illustrate the sound I’m dealing with. Check out the videos here. The second one might provide a clearer example of the issue.

What I Know So Far

I’m concerned about this situation because the only moving parts in my setup should be the fans and the hard disk drive (HDD). However, after monitoring the fans during the episodes of this noise, they don’t appear to be the source. My operating system is installed on a solid-state drive (SSD), which eliminates traditional HDD sounds like the clicking that often signals failure.

Interestingly, this rumbling noise seems to have a sporadic nature—it can vanish for days on end, only to resurface with renewed intensity. The duration of each episode matches what you’ll see in my videos, and the sound occurs in bursts, repeating a single second of rumbling multiple times over a span of a few minutes. It neither resembles the typical clicking of a failing HDD nor does it seem to originate from the fans. I find myself at a bit of a loss.

My Setup

For context, here are the specifications of my computer:
Motherboard: MSI
CPU: Intel i5-6600K
GPU: GTX 960
Age of PC: Approximately 5 years

If anyone has insight or suggestions on what this might be or how I could diagnose the issue further, I would greatly appreciate your input. Thank you in advance for any assistance you can provide!

  1. Thank you for sharing detailed information about your issue. Rumbling sounds that are intermittent and not related to the fans or HDD can sometimes be caused by several hardware components. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

    • Inspect the Power Supply Unit (PSU): A failing or malfunctioning PSU can produce rumbling noises. If possible, try testing with a known-good power supply or use a PSU tester to check its stability.
    • Check for Loose or Vibrating Components: Ensure that all internal components, including RAM modules, GPU, and expansion cards, are securely seated. Loose screws or mounting brackets can cause vibrations that produce noise.
    • Monitor the GPU: Since your GPU (GTX 960) can sometimes produce coil whine or vibrations, consider testing the system with the GPU temporarily removed or replaced if available. You can also try underclocking or adjusting GPU settings to see if the noise diminishes.
    • Examine the CPU Cooler and Mounting: A loose CPU cooler or vibrations from the cooler’s fan can sometimes cause noise. Make sure the heatsink is properly mounted and the fan is secure.
    • Use Diagnostic Tools: Run hardware diagnostics to check for failing components. Software like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner can help monitor temperatures and voltages to identify anomalies.
