Version 1: After six calls to my ISP’s technical support about frequent internet disconnects, high ping delays to servers, and packet loss, they responded with, “What’s packet loss?”

Frustrations with Internet Connectivity: Seeking Solutions for Persistent Issues

In today’s digital age, reliable internet connectivity is an essential aspect of our daily lives. Unfortunately, many users face hurdles that can turn this necessity into a source of frustration. I want to share my recent experience with my Internet Service Provider (ISP) and seek advice from the community on how to move forward.

Over the last few weeks, I have encountered significant issues with my internet connection. My Huawei HG532E modem, which I am using for a wired connection, has been plagued by frequent disconnections. Both the Internet and ADSL lights on the modem regularly turn off, leaving me without access for periods of up to 20 seconds. This disruption occurs approximately every 2 to 5 minutes, severely impacting my ability to work and enjoy online activities.

To further complicate matters, I am also experiencing high latency when pinging servers and notable packet loss. Despite my efforts to troubleshoot, including switching to G.dmt modulation, which alleviated some issues but intensified others, the problems persist. I’ve taken steps to ensure that latency between my PC and modem is minimized, yet these measures have only borne limited success.

In my attempt to resolve these issues, I reached out to the ISP’s technical support team no fewer than six times. Unfortunately, during these conversations, I often felt that my concerns weren’t taken seriously, as one representative even seemed uninformed about basic terms like “packet loss.”

After requesting access to a higher tier of support, I was promised a callback within two days. Regrettably, that was two weeks ago, and each follow-up only seems to push the timeline further back.

I’ve reached a point of exasperation and am turning to this community for help. If anyone has encountered similar issues or has suggestions for effective ways to escalate this matter with my ISP, your insights would be greatly appreciated. How have you navigated internet service issues, and what steps should I consider next?

Thank you for your time, and I hope to find a resolution soon!

  1. Hi, thanks for sharing your detailed experience. Persistent disconnections, high ping, and packet loss can be quite challenging, but there are several troubleshooting steps and escalation methods you might consider:

    • Perform Basic Line Tests: Use tools like Speedtest.net to measure latency, jitter, and packet loss. Document your results over multiple tests at different times.
    • Check for Firmware Updates: Ensure your Huawei HG532E modem has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, firmware updates include fixes for connectivity issues.
    • Replace or Test with Different Equipment: If possible, try using a different modem or router to rule out hardware faults.
    • Monitor Line Quality: Use diagnostics tools like DSL Reports or your modem’s diagnostic features to check for defective wiring or line noise.
    • Request a Line Inspection: Contact your ISP again, emphasizing the sustained issues and providing your documented test results. Ask specifically for a line attenuation and noise margin report, or request a technician visit to inspect the physical line and connections.
    • Escalate the Issue: If standard support isn’t helping
