Version 101: Discovered a public live feed of a child’s bedroom. Reached out to ISP Rogers.com, but received no concern. What steps should I take next?

Confronting a Disturbing Discovery: Public Webcam Streaming from a Child’s Bedroom

Recently, while browsing a security-focused search engine, I stumbled upon an alarming public webcam stream broadcasting from a child’s bedroom. Alarmed by the potential invasion of privacy, I traced the IP address back to a customer of Rogers, an ISP based in Canada. Being a concerned parent myself, I felt an urgent need to address the situation and ensure the webcam owner was made aware of this unsettling exposure.

Reaching Out to Rogers

With hopes that Rogers would take immediate action, I contacted their customer support team. Unfortunately, my experience was far from satisfactory. After a lengthy discussion with a first-level support representative, I was transferred to a supervisor. Despite my clearly outlined concerns, the outcome was disappointing. Instead of taking action, I was advised to contact the authorities in Canada or back in my home country, Austria. This response felt inadequate, especially given the serious nature of the issue.

Updates on the Situation

On January 26, I provided an update stating that the webcam owner had been contacted, and the video feed was now secured with a password. It’s a relief to know that the situation has been addressed, yet the journey to that resolution wasn’t straightforward. I did receive an email from Rogers indicating that my concerns had been escalated, and they would reach out to the webcam owner to inform them of the vulnerability.

Ongoing Efforts and Community Support

I want to express my gratitude to everyone who reached out with suggestions and support. It’s heartening to see such a proactive community. In addition to contacting Rogers, I have reached out to various organizations, including the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security. I also attempted to connect with local authorities through the phone number provided by Rogers, although I faced challenges in making contact. I plan to persist in my efforts to ensure proper measures are taken to protect individuals from privacy violations.

Reflections on Privacy and Responsibility

This experience has highlighted the importance of online privacy and the responsibilities associated with sharing video feeds. As technology becomes increasingly integrated into our homes, it’s crucial for users to be aware of their settings and potential vulnerabilities. If you encounter similar situations or have concerns, please do not hesitate to take action—whether it’s reporting to the service provider or local authorities.

I’ll continue to keep you informed as I receive further updates regarding this matter. Thank you once again for your support and engagement in

  1. Thank you for sharing this important and concerning experience. Addressing issues related to online privacy and security can be challenging, but there are a few additional steps you might consider:

    • Document everything: Keep detailed records of all your communications with Rogers, authorities, and any other organizations involved. This documentation can be useful if further investigation is needed.
    • Report to local authorities: Since the webcam stream involves potentially illegal content, reporting to local law enforcement in your country and in Canada can help escalate the matter appropriately.
    • Contact the hosting platform: If the webcam feed is hosted on a specific server or platform, report the issue directly to their abuse or security team.
    • Secure your networks: For your own online safety, ensure your Wi-Fi and network devices are updated with the latest security patches, and consider using network monitoring tools to detect unusual activity.
    • Raise awareness: Sharing this experience with trusted community groups or online forums can help educate others on protecting their privacy settings and recognizing vulnerabilities.
    • Consult cybersecurity professionals: If you continue to encounter issues or need specialized assistance, consider engaging with cybersecurity experts who can help identify potential vulnerabilities and recommend preventive measures.
