Seeking Guidance on Replacing My ThinkBook G4 Keyboard with a Japanese Layout

I’m looking to upgrade the keyboard on my ThinkBook G4 and I have my eye on a Japanese version. While I’ve found a Japanese keyboard that’s designed for the ThinkBook G2, I’m curious if it’s feasible to use it on my G4 model. Both keyboards are the same dimensions, and all keys appear to be identical, so they should physically fit my laptop.

However, I’ve noticed that the connectors have different traces. Interestingly, I’ve encountered varying trace designs for different localization layouts on the G4, which adds to the complexity of the situation.

If anyone has experience or knowledge regarding the compatibility of these keyboards, I would greatly appreciate your insights. Do you think the Japanese keyboard for the G2 could work on my ThinkBook G4? Your expertise could really help me make an informed decision!

  1. Compatibility Considerations for ThinkBook G4 Keyboard Replacement

Replacing a laptop keyboard with a different layout or from a different model can be a complex task, especially when connector types and traces differ. Based on your description, although the physical dimensions and key placements seem to align, the difference in connector traces indicates potential compatibility issues.

In this case, I recommend the following steps:

    1. Check the connector type: Compare the connectors on both the G2 Japanese keyboard and your G4. If they are physically similar but have different traces, the connectors may not be directly compatible.
    2. Consult the manufacturer or authorized service provider: Reach out to Lenovo support for official guidance. They can confirm whether the G2 Japanese keyboard can be used on the G4 model with or without modifications.
    3. Consider replacement options: Look for keyboards explicitly designed for the ThinkBook G4 with a Japanese layout. This ensures compatibility in terms of connectors, traces, and firmware.
    4. Professional installation: If you proceed with a compatible keyboard, consider having a professional technician perform the installation to avoid potential damage.

It’s important to avoid forcing incompatible parts, as this could lead to hardware malfunction. If you have the ability to test with an adapter or a different connector, that might help confirm compatibility before making
