Weird Lenovo power issue.

Troubleshooting a Peculiar Power Issue on a Lenovo T460: Seeking Solutions

If you own a Lenovo T460 or are considering purchasing one, you may want to hear about a perplexing power issue I’ve been facing with my 2017 model. After buying it used last year, I quickly found myself in a frustrating situation regarding its charging system.

When the laptop is connected to AC power, it operates as if it’s running on battery. The battery indicator reflects that the computer is not charging, and its battery life steadily decreases. Conversely, when I unplug the AC adapter, the battery life indicator vanishes entirely, leading Windows to operate as if the device is powered solely by AC without any battery support. Plugging the AC adapter back in does bring back the battery indicator, yet the battery continues to deplete.

Initially, I replaced both batteries, as one of them had stopped functioning a few months after my purchase. This temporarily restored normal operation for about twelve hours, but the issue returned. Following that, I explored several solutions, including:

• Switching to a different power cord: This provided a brief respite before the problem resurfaced.
• Updating the BIOS using Lenovo’s utility: Unfortunately, the power issue reappeared about half an hour later.
• Disconnecting the internal and CMOS batteries: This fix lasted only ten minutes before reverting back to the original problem.
• Reconnecting the AC jack to the motherboard: This resulted in a brief charge of about two minutes, only for the issue to return afterward.

At this juncture, I find myself at a loss. Online searches haven’t yielded any matches for this specific problem, and I’m eager for a solution that doesn’t involve parting ways with my laptop. It’s an Intel i7 machine that I scored at an excellent price, and it’s my go-to for enjoying Paradox games.
